Hay calculator
Most horses need about 1.5 to 2.5 percent of their body weight in forage per day (hay, haylage or grass, counted as dry matter). Pick the goal and see the daily amount.
Weigh the hay rather than counting flakes: flakes vary a lot. Change feed gradually, give clean water and salt, and ask your vet for horses with laminitis, metabolic problems or special needs.
Good to know
- Horses are built to eat small amounts often; long gaps without forage raise the risk of ulcers and colic.
- Easy keepers that need to lose weight can use slow feeders instead of less hay time.
- Concentrates and balancers are on top of forage, not instead of it.
In Barnly you build the feed plan for morning, midday and evening, see the hay need for each horse from its weight, and see what the plan costs per month.
