Horse weight calculator
Measure the girth around the barrel just behind the withers, and the length from the point of the shoulder to the point of the buttock. A tape measure or a piece of string works.
An estimate, normally within 5 to 10 percent. A scale is exact, and a weigh-in at a feed store or vet is worth doing a few times a year. Heavy fat cover, pregnancy and unusual builds make tape estimates less accurate.
How to measure
- Stand the horse square on level ground, head relaxed.
- Girth: around the barrel, behind the elbow and withers, snug but not tight, read at the end of a breath out.
- Length: from the point of the shoulder in a straight line to the point of the buttock (the pin bone).
- Measure the same way each time and note the date to see the trend.
Barnly keeps weight and body condition score (1 to 9) over time for each horse and draws the trend, and its weight tape tool uses the same formula as this page.
