Barnly

Horse blanket advisor

Enter tonight's weather and your horse's details. This follows the same rules as the Barnly app: wind chill, a body clip, age, body condition and shelter move the temperature your horse "feels", and the result is mapped to a blanket weight.

Quick chart

For a healthy adult, unclipped, normal condition, at pasture with little wind and dry weather:

TemperatureBlanket
14 °C (57 °F) and aboveNone
9 to 14 °C (48 to 57 °F)Sheet
4 to 9 °C (39 to 48 °F)Light, about 100 g
-2 to 4 °C (28 to 39 °F)Medium, about 200 g
-9 to -2 °C (16 to 28 °F)Heavy, about 300 g
Below -9 °C (16 °F)Heavy with a neck cover

This is general guidance, not a rule. Many unclipped, healthy horses with shelter and forage need no blanket in cold weather. Always check the horse: a hand behind the shoulder, and watch for shivering, sweat or rubbing.

The Barnly app reads tonight's forecast for your stable and suggests the blanket for you, with the reasons, and can remind you at 5 pm (Pro).
