How often does a horse need the farrier, vet and dentist?
Every horse is different, and your own vet and farrier know yours best. These are the typical intervals that many owners start from.
| What | Typical interval |
|---|---|
| Farrier: shod | every 4 to 6 weeks |
| Farrier: barefoot trim | every 6 to 8 weeks |
| Dentist | once a year (young and old horses may need it more often) |
| Vaccinations | usually once a year, as your vet advises for your region and use |
| Worming | based on a fecal egg count and your vet's plan, often every 6 months or so |
| Vet check-up | once a year |
| Physio or bodywork | every 2 to 3 months for horses in work |
| Saddle fitting | once a year, and when the horse changes shape |
Keeping track
- Book the next visit before you leave: put the date in your phone straight away.
- With several horses, group visits (one farrier trip for everyone) and write each horse's date down separately.
- Keep the passport, vaccination page and chip number where the sitter can find them.
Barnly sets these up for each horse with the intervals above, reminds you at 9:00 on the day and the day before, and when you tick one off the next date counts from that day. You can change every interval.
